Davie's Milestones AKA *Inchstones*
If you have a child with hypotonia or GDD, then you've probably heard the term "inchstones." See, typically developing babies and toddlers have milestones. They don't all reach the same milestones at the same time, but there is a general timeline where most children meet typical goals in a similar form or fashion. Children with special needs tend to meet these milestones sometimes months or even years later; so they are called inchstones. With a special needs child, you have to learn to throw out all expectations of meeting normal milestones. You thrive on every teeny, tiny success and you CELEBRATE the inchstones. We have been blessed with Davie in this area. Thankfully he has never regressed; however, it seems he has grown at a snail's pace in some areas of his development. We like to look at inchstones as a positive thing. Instead of saying what Davie can't do, we are excited to share what he can do! Here is a list of Davie's Inchstones from birth to present. I will update as he approaches and meets new goals. These aren't very detailed, but will give you an idea where he was physically at along his little timeline. Birth up to age 2 months - During this time-frame Davie was like a typical Newborn apart from his health issues. His newborn stage just lasted a little....longer.
2-4 months - Starting to smile and Coo. Grasping at the air. Kicking legs.
5 months - Giggling out loud. Trying to roll over.
6 months - Starting to keep food down and gain weight. Holding head up better. Davie gets glasses!
9 months - Laughing out loud. Clapping.
11 months - Starts solids...1 puree per day.
12 months - Starting to sign "more" when he wants more bite or milk. We still bathed him in the sink because it was easier to contain the Jello Baby:)
16 months - Holding bottle on his own. Squeals in delight. Starting to push up on arms when laying on belly.
18 months - Starting to Prop sit. Fake laughing. Holding bottle with one hand. Explore/play with mouth.
19 months - Starting to turn 360 when laying on floor. Holding bottle without being cradled by mom. Will drink water from a "honeybear" cup.
20 months - Davie loves music and will "dance" or bounce/bop when placed in his bouncer. Cries to go outside. Standing and bearing weight in his bouncer.
24 months old - Starts to army crawl. Starting to stand against toys/tables when you place him in a standing position. Able to sit in bathtub on his own.
2 years 9 months - Davie starts to CRAWL in a 4-point position. Sit unassisted in a store buggy.
3 years old - Crawling and Climbing furniture. Pulling to a stand. Communicating better through emotion.
3 years 6 months - Cruising along furniture. Walking while holding our hands. Chewing on toys/blankets.
